There are photographs that explain a place better than any text. A field, horses, a group of players, and around them, those who came to watch. Hidden within these vintage images is the true essence of a destination that was about to awaken.
"In those vintage images of Sotogrande there is more than just a polo match: there is a way of understanding life that was beginning to take shape."
The dawn by the sea
Almost 60 years ago, at the dawn of Sotogrande, polo began to write its own history. It was Enrique Zóbel who brought this sport from the Philippines, creating the legendary La Playa field. This first pitch was not only foundational, but also had the unique distinction of being literally right next to the sea.
Right there, on what is today Sotogrande Beach—popularly known by its nickname Los Lacasitos—this first field was nestled. It was built even before the completion of the first beach club, the beloved Cucurucho (now Trocadero), providing unforgettable memories for the first residents.
A family passion
At that time, polo was not as popular as it has become today; it was more of an intimate, family affair. Every afternoon, everyone gathered to watch the games and enjoy a fun time with friends. The spectators were none other than the relatives of those pioneers who brought to this corner a passion that had already taken deep root in nearby areas like Jerez.
From those humble beginnings, the area has given a tremendous push to this sport over the decades, cementing its legacy through internationally renowned institutions like the Santa María Polo Club and Ayala Polo.
The foundation of a destination
While the horses galloped, Sotogrande was setting its course to become what it is today. Back then, only the Costa area existed, the iconic Reyes y Reinas neighborhood with some large villas already built, and the estate had only one entrance. The Del Río apartments were being finished, the La Playa apartments were already a reality, and the iron bridge over the Guadiaro river was newly opened.
That family atmosphere was the seed of what Sotogrande polo means to the entire world today. Nowadays, it is one of the few places internationally where you can play polo all year round, hosting highly prestigious trophies such as the "Sotogrande Gold Cup", which has been played since 1971 and turns the estate into the undisputed world capital of the sport.
